ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Letter of intent as outlined on the program MAT MAP sheet which can be found at https://exsc.byu.edu/master-of-athletic-training

  • Minimum GPA of 3.2 for last 60 semester hours of upper-level academic work or overall

  • Resume

  • Applicants desiring the Master of Athletic Training (MAT) must submit supplemental
    application documents. Technical Standards for Admission and Physical Exam form
    are due at the time of the application. Immunization Record, Background Check, Drug
    Screening, and CPR/AED card must be submitted before first semester of MAT

  • Nonnative English speakers who are not eligible for an exemption must obtain the minimum required score on any of the English proficiency exams accepted by BYU Graduate Studies

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

This degree provides students with an entry-level degree in athletic training. Upon completing this degree, students will be eligible to complete the BOC exam and become certified athletic trainers (upon passing the BOC) and prepared to assume leadership roles in clinical and allied health and medical programs. This degree does not require research or a thesis.

  • Credit hours:  Minimum 39 work hours.  This is an entry-level master’s degree and does not require research or a thesis.

  • Prerequisites:  Graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Sciences or a related field, including all of the courses listed below or equivalents:  Science of Biology (course), Human Anatomy (course or equivalent), Essentials in Human Physiology (course or course), Pathophysiology for the AT course (may be taken at BYU when you begin your program if no equivalent), College Physics (course/course), College Chemistry (course or course/course), Psychology (course).

  • Transfer students need to determine equivalents to prerequisite courses

  • Take all of the following required courses: course, coursecoursecoursecoursecoursecoursecoursecoursecourse, (TC 011), coursecourse, and course.

  • Take the four clinical education courses over four regular fall and winter semesters (8): coursecoursecourse, and course.

  • Complete elective courses approved by your advisory committee to fulfill program requirements.  Electives from the following:  coursecoursecoursecoursecoursecoursecoursecoursecourse, course, or other courses as approved by your advisory committee.

Athletic Training Knowledge, Skills, and Ability

Learning Outcome

Students will demonstrate acquisition and application of athletic training knowledge, skills, and abilities at the master's degree level. The educational standards are listed as objectives and outcomes in required athletic training courses. The competencies and proficiencies are now curriculum standards: See 2020 Professional Standards for MAT (Appendix F).

Athletic Training Professional Preparation

Learning Outcome

Students will be prepared for athletic training professional practice by demonstrating professional dispositions and clinical decision-making with patients in level-specific practice internships at affiliated clinical sites with the mentoring of qualified clinical preceptors (instructors) by establishing collaborative relationships. Students will also demonstrate leadership and management skills.

Professional/Ethical Behavior in Classroom, Clinic, and Work

Learning Outcome

Students will demonstrate professional, ethical, and moral behavior as students and clinicians in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings preparatory to professional conduct in their careers. As professionals, graduated students will synthesize what they learned at BYU to work as ethical and moral people in their communities.

Learning Outcome

Students will demonstrate oral and written communication skills with emphasis on presentation of clinically relevant evidence. They will communicate effectively and professionally with the sports medicine team, staff members, patients, and peers. Continue to work with assessment methods for best results.

Learning Outcome

Students will demonstrate a foundational understanding of clinical research, including design, methods and applied statistics. They will be able to think critically to identify and solve problems by integrating scientific information and research into athletic training practice.

Evidence-Based Practice

Learning Outcome

Students will be able to read, digest, and synthesize key concepts from the relevant athletic training and medical literature. They will be able to develop a relevant clinical question using a predefined question format (e.g., PICO = Patients, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes). They will be able to apply and interpret clinical outcomes to assess patient status, progress, and change using psychometrically sound outcome instruments.
