Department of Accountancy
The School of Accountancy (SOA) administers one graduate program through the Marriott School: the Master of Accountancy—MAcc.
The BYU Marriott Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program offers a graduate program for students who have already completed a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in accounting from an accredited college or university in the United States. An applicant with a bachelor’s degree in accounting can complete the MAcc degree in a year. U.S. News & World Report ranked BYU Marriott’s graduate accounting program fourth in the nation in 2024.
The MAcc degree offers two emphases within its program: Professional Accountancy and Tax. The Professional Accountancy emphasis is designed to prepare students for a career in providing professional services for firms and corporations (advisory services, assurance services, etc.). Subject matter unique to the Professional Accountancy emphasis includes advanced courses in research, financial accounting, auditing, managerial accounting, accounting information systems, and other similar topics. The Tax emphasis prepares students for a career in corporate and individual taxation. Subject matter unique to the Tax emphasis includes advanced courses in tax research, corporate taxation, current tax policy, and other similar topics. In addition to studying within the Professional Accountancy or Tax emphasis, MAcc students also have the option to pursue other specialties as they seek their degree such as the Information Systems Minor, PhD Prep Track and the JD/MAcc joint degree.
As of fall 2022, School of Accountancy (SOA) graduates will receive a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) designation with their degree.
Graduates from the SOA find employment in private and public companies, public accounting firms, academia, and government and nonprofit organizations. Accountants are innovators, entrepreneurs, leaders, critical thinkers, creative problem solvers, and trusted advisors. As part of their institutions’ management teams, accountants assist in making strategic business decisions.
The placement of MAcc students from the SOA is very strong. Most MAcc students report at least two job offers by the end of their job search. For the past several years, 100 percent of MAcc students have accepted employment. More than seventy different firms and agencies, including all of the major public accounting firms, recruit SOA graduates.
