Course Description

Following a brief introduction to theoretical aspects of speech motor control and a review of basic neurology, students will learn about the assessment and treatment of specific motor speech disorders.

Etiology of Motor Speech Disorders

Learning Outcome

Describe the etiology and characteristics of the different dysarthria subtypes, as well as apraxia of speech, including anatomic, physiologic, aerodynamic and acoustic features.

Learning Outcome

Show understanding of principles and methods of assessment and intervention in motor speech disorders, based on a sound grasp of the physiologic rationale for any treatment provided.

ASHA KASA Standards

Learning Outcome

The American Speech-Language Hearing Association has established standards for student learning, known as KASA (Knowledge and Skills Acquisition). The following standards apply to this course: Standard IV-B: Basic Human Communication Processes The student will demonstrate the ability to integrate information pertaining to normal and abnormal human development across the life span re: neurological bases of human communication. Standard IV-D: Prevention, Assessment, and Intervention for persons with communication and swallowing disorders The student will demonstrate the ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate knowledge in the principles and methods of prevention, assessment, and intervention in the area of speech sound production disorders. Standard V-B: Skills in Evaluation The student will demonstrate the ability to interpret, integrate, and synthesize all information to develop diagnoses and make appropriate recommendations for intervention in the area of speech sound production.
